今年里約奧運，北韓代表團有更大的目標，喊出至少要奪下5面金牌的口號。根據韓國《東亞日報》報導，一位不具名的北韓相關人士透露，金正恩曾嫌3面金牌太少，要求要拼到5面金牌。
報導指出，金正恩在代表團出發前，詢問本屆奧運可望獲得幾金，當時北韓奧委會委員評估有3金希望，但金正恩認為太少，至少也要拿下5金，而這番話也給代表團極大的壓力，尹永福隨後對外表示，「千里迢迢來到里約，不會只想奪得5面金牌。」
上屆倫敦奧運，北韓光在舉重就取得3金1銅，但今年奪金希望嚴潤哲敗給中國破世界紀錄的龍清泉，截至今日，北韓還沒奪任何一面金牌，只有2銀，這成績距離金正恩的目標差得很遠。
北韓官員相當重視奧運會成績，尤其領導人金正恩長期關心國家體育發展，據了解，如果北韓運動員在奧運順利奪金，回到平壤將能得到一個大房子和車子。
